Is Marathon Education Legit?

Marathon Education is a legitimate tutoring company that was founded in 2021 and has since become one of the fastest-growing EdTech startups in Vietnam. Their legitimacy is underlined by having raised $6.6million in venture capital, and being featured by major publishers including Techcrunch, YCombinator, Forbes, TechinAsia, and VNExpress.

Marathon Education tuition is conducted online with K-12 Vietnamese students and adults. While the company draws upon domestic educators to provide group lessons in Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Literature, they also hire foreign-based teachers for 1v1 or 1v2 English classes.

The Marathon teaching platform is ClassIn, and job responsibilities include:

  • Teaching English to students
  • Preparing the lesson before teaching
  • Giving comments for students after the class
  • Giving marks to students
  • Directly participating in the company’s strategic product development
  • Training and development orientation
  • Working with the young and dynamic Technical Team

Below is a recorded example of a Marathon Education English class:

Marathon Education Salary Information

The Marathon Education pay rate varies depending on whether you are applying as a Native English Speaker (NES) or as a Filipino:

  • NES = $14 – $16/hour
  • Filipino = 235-470 PHP

Marathon Education Hours and Schedule

While the schedule is advertised as flexible, you will have to be available in the evening (Vietnam time) for most classes.

Teachers are expected to commit to 10+ working hours a week.

While some time is taken up by prep and feedback, lesson plans and materials are provided which reduces this to some extent.

Marathon Education Requirements

To teach with Marathon Education, you must demonstrate:

  • Completion of a Bachelor’s Degree
  • Certification of IELTS/TESOL/TEFL/TESL/TOEFL, etc.
  • Experience in teaching online (at least 1 year is a plus)

To apply as a Native teacher (with a higher pay rate), you must also come from a country where English is a Native language.

Marathon Education Recruitment Process

The Marathon Education hiring process is relatively simple, requiring that you send an email to [email protected] and/or [email protected] with your resume/CV.

However, due to the volume of applications, it can take a month or two before candidates are invited to interview.

Marathon Education Interview Process

For the Marathon Education interview, you will be told a little bit about the company, asked to introduce yourself and answer some standard questions regarding teaching experience, such as:

  • The number of years you have taught
  • What age groups?
  • Your teaching style?
  • What you would do if your student(s) didn’t want to turn on their video/microphone(s)?

The Q&A part lasts around 10 minutes, before a 15-minute teaching demo on ClassIn where the interviewer will play the role of a student. You will be emailed teaching materials beforehand to help you prepare for this.

As with the initial application, it can take some time – usually a few weeks – before successful interviewees receive their contract and initial students from Marathon.

Conclusion – Should You Apply to Marathon Education?

Unfortunately, as a relatively young startup that has only just begun recruiting overseas teachers, very little information has been shared yet regarding what it is like to work for Marathon Education. While the company’s credentials appear legitimate, and it takes little time or effort to email your CV/resume, there is still an element of uncertainty around Marathon until they become more established.
